Introduction
Welcome to our small-group maths tutoring FAQ. This page addresses common questions parents ask about our approach, methods, and values. By understanding our process, we hope you’ll feel confident that enrolling your child now can make a positive and lasting difference in their maths journey.
General Programme Questions
Q: What are your qualifications?
A: I have a degree in mathematics and statistics and a university diploma in physics and statistics. I have also built several businesses across a range of disciplines and have first-hand experience in managing and educating people in the workplace. My wish now is to make a difference for those pursuing their way in life.
Q: What ages and skill levels do you cater to?
A: I welcome students at pre-GCSE, from early secondary levels to GCSE. Before placing your child in a group, I assess their understanding to ensure they join a small group of up to five students with compatible learning needs. This setting helps all learners move forward confidently.
Q: How are students placed into groups?
A: Each student completes an initial assessment. This allows me to group learners who are working at a similar level so the entire class progresses at a comfortable pace. Parents often find that this careful grouping helps their children feel understood and supported from day one.
Q: Why do you use small groups instead of one-to-one lessons?
A: Small groups offer a dynamic, interactive environment where students learn not just from me, but also from one another’s questions and insights. Many parents will see faster growth in confidence and understanding compared to one-to-one sessions. Hearing peers ask the questions they might be too shy to raise themselves, children realise they’re not alone—and that sense of community often leads to quicker, more meaningful progress.
My Background and Approach
Q: Are you a qualified teacher?
A: I am not a traditionally certified teacher. My background is in business, where I developed strong problem-solving skills and clear communication methods. Later in life, I have now dedicated myself fully to teaching maths, applying these skills to help students grasp concepts clearly and logically. I was one of the missed students, only finding my way by accident.
Q: Why did you choose to become a maths tutor after a career in business?
A: Growing up, I had very little guidance in maths, and I understand firsthand the frustration and anxiety that can come from feeling lost in the subject. After a successful business career, I wanted to give back by helping young learners build confidence and understanding. Today, I’m committed to turning what was once a struggle for me into an enriching, supportive experience for your child.
Q: What makes your teaching method effective, given your non-traditional background?
A: My approach is rooted in empathy, patience, and real-world application. It is well-grounded scientifically, and I have benefitted from the techniques. I break complex ideas into clear steps and relate them to everyday scenarios. This approach resonates with students and helps them see the “why” behind the numbers. Many parents report that this fresh perspective quickly transforms their child’s attitude toward maths, replacing intimidation with enthusiasm. The students will be taught to embrace relaxation in their learning.
Curriculum and Teaching Methodologies
Q: Do your lessons align with the national curriculum?
A: I closely follow the national curriculum so that your child’s learning complements what they’re studying at school. This alignment helps reinforce classroom knowledge and prepare them for upcoming exams. We will cover all examining boards' syllabi.
Q: How do you ensure concepts ‘stick’?
A: I blend conceptual explanations, visual aids, practical exercises, and group discussions. By consistently relating concepts to real-life examples, I help students internalise the material. In small groups, learners benefit from their peers’ questions, which often clarify misunderstandings and make the learning more memorable.
Q: How will you keep my child engaged?
A: The small-group environment fosters active participation. Students share problem-solving strategies, celebrate each other’s breakthroughs, and realise they’re part of a supportive community. This sparks genuine enthusiasm—something many parents say is missing from traditional, lecture-based tutoring.
Student Experience and Progress
Q: How often should my child attend sessions?
A: Most families find that one or two weekly sessions strike a good balance. Starting early ensures they gain confidence and mastery sooner rather than later. Groups will be formed into once-weekly and twice-weekly students.
Q: Do you offer one-to-one tutoring?
A: Yes, we do. However, small group sessions are often more comfortable for students.
Q: How soon will I see improvement?
A: Every child is unique, but parents should notice a boost in confidence and engagement after four or five sessions. Over time, these improvements translate into better class performance, higher test scores, and a more positive attitude towards maths—outcomes that can set them on a brighter academic path.
Q: Will my child receive homework?
A: They will be given reinforcement learning, which they must do independently. These are designed to deepen understanding without creating pressure and enable me to understand if there are any learning difficulties. Completing a few targeted exercises can help your child approach the next session more confidently.
Q: What if my child struggles with a particular concept?
A: I pay close attention to each student’s needs. When someone finds a concept challenging, I break it down into simpler steps, use alternative explanations, and encourage the group to discuss it. This collaborative effort often unlocks understanding, turning confusion into a clear “aha” moment.
Logistics and Scheduling
Q: How do I schedule or reschedule sessions?
A: Scheduling is less flexible than one-to-one lessons. Students need to see lessons as "going to school". If a student is ill and unable to attend we may do a one-to-one session to catch up. If you need to reschedule, I’ll do my best to accommodate.
Q: What if my child misses a session?
A: If you provide advance notice, I can often arrange a catch-up session or provide materials so your child doesn’t fall behind. My goal is to keep them on track and maintain their momentum.
Q: Can I observe sessions, or are they recorded?
A: You’re welcome to observe, but please do not involve yourself with the lesson and remember your child's need for independence. I may record sessions, so please ensure you let me know if this is an issue. Recordings This can help ensure quality and allow you to see your child’s progress over time.
Q: Do you offer trial sessions?
A: Yes, a trial one-on-one lesson is compulsory and free. We need to see how their child responds. Often, children leave that first lesson feeling more confident, which reassures parents they’ve made the right choice. Small groups will enhance this confidence.
Instructor Credentials
Q: Who teaches the sessions?
A: I personally lead every session. I’m dedicated full-time to helping children overcome hurdles in maths. Parents value the consistency and trust of working with the same committed educator each week. This service is bespoke and not part of a tutor business aggregating large numbers of tutors. There is nothing wrong with these services.
Q: Do you stay updated with educational methods?
A: Absolutely. I regularly review educational research, adapt to curriculum changes, and refine my methods. My non-traditional background means I’m always searching for creative, effective ways to support your child’s learning journey.
Q: How do you handle feedback or concerns?
A: I encourage open communication. If you have questions, suggestions, or worries, please reach out. Many adjustments can be made to ensure your child thrives, and I’m here to help you feel confident every step of the way.
Costs and Payment
Q: How much do lessons cost?
A: The price is £25 per lesson for group sessions. That's it. If I have to do a one-to-one catchup, the price is £40 per session. One-to-one sessions are discouraged.
Q: Do you offer discounts or packages?
A: I cannot imagine giving discounts, but I am open to discussion.
Q: What is your cancellation or refund policy?
A: My policies are straightforward and transparent, detailed on the website’s terms and conditions page. If you have any questions, I’m happy to clarify before you commit.
Final Encouragement
My goal is to create a nurturing, results-driven environment where your child can truly flourish in maths. There is no such thing as a student being "not a maths person." Small-group interaction, a caring approach, and my first-hand understanding of what it feels like to need guidance make this a supportive, growth-focused experience.
